There are sentences that are told to you like sentences and that sting you directly, that you leave in a corner of your head and that come back regularly to tickle your story to remind you that they have touched a sensitive chord in you.

The sentence I often come back to, which is simple in approach, but which for me is much more impactful than its primary meaning and could deserve that a grief-stricken teacher who wants his students to think about saying: “You have four hours to write on this sentence” is as follows:

“If you answer the question How? you are paid €1,000 a day, if you answer the question Why? you are paid €5,000 a day.”

Beyond the daily rate aspect introduced in this sentence, I wonder about the importance of these two questions.

A little as if we told you that what is most valuable is knowing why we drive a car and not how we drive a car: to go from point A to point B is more valuable information than by where I am going to pass to go from this point A to this point B?

Reducing to a managerial or operational decision, the value of the choice of a KPI (“Why choose this KPI?”) is higher than the value of the process for which this KPI will actually be fed.

This may make sense:

in any entity, performance measurement is one of the means of examining whether the objectives are achieved according to an effectiveness and/or efficiency modus. For simplicity.
Knowing the right indicators of this performance is certainly more important than the way in which these indicators will be fed, without saying that the data feeding these indicators is not essential. There is a hierarchy in the implementation of a decision.

This sentence can also imply that the Why would be linked to the strategic decision, or let’s say the managerial, at the level of the governing bodies of the companies and the How would be linked to the operational.

I’m going to give you the circumstances in which I heard this sentence: during a master’s course in finance and Business Performance Management (actually management-oriented management control) at HEC Paris. In short, the teacher told us:
if you want to be rich or not to mention money, rise in the hierarchy of your company, or if you are a consultant and you want to charge your clients more, you must answer the question “Why?” and not to the question “How?”.

Of course, since everyone present in the amphitheater that day wants to answer the question “Why?” in their company or with their customers 🙂 Don’t ask me why! 🙂

But you, how would you have reacted to listening to this sentence?
